In a remarkable turn of events, the Toyota Innova Hycross Hybrid MPV has emerged as a clear winner in the Indian automotive market, outselling both the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder hybrids combined. The Q2-2023 sales figures reveal that the Toyota Hycross Hybrid has taken the lead, reaffirming its position as a preferred choice among eco-conscious consumers.
The Q2-2023 sales figures for the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder were recorded at 3,763 units and 2,251 units, respectively. In contrast, the Toyota Innova Hycross Hybrid soared to an all-time high level of sales, reaching 26,794 units during the same period. This remarkable achievement establishes the Toyota Hycross Hybrid as the clear leader in the hybrid segment.
The Toyota Innova Hycross Hybrid comes with two powertrain options, offering customers versatility and power. The first drivetrain option is a pure petrol powertrain, featuring a 2.0-litre engine producing 173 bhp and 209 Nm of torque. The other drivetrain option offers a hybrid setup with the same 2.0-litre petrol engine, generating a maximum of 184 bhp and 188 Nm of torque. The hybrid version is paired with an e-CVT gearbox, enhancing its efficiency and performance.
Toyota’s decision not to offer a manual gearbox with the Innova Hycross Hybrid was undoubtedly well-founded, given the increasing popularity of automatic transmissions in the market. Additionally, Toyota has chosen not to include a diesel engine option in the Innova Hycross Hybrid, focusing instead on catering to the growing demand for eco-friendly alternatives.
The Innova Hycross Hybrid boasts a range of premium features and sophisticated design elements, setting it apart from the Innova Crysta. With a 10-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system, a semi-digital instrument cluster, leather upholstery, front ventilated seats, and a panoramic sunroof, this hybrid MPV provides the perfect blend of comfort and modernity.
Moreover, the Toyota ADAS system, equipped with adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert, has further contributed to the Innova Hycross Hybrid’s popularity among safety-conscious consumers.
The overall sales trend for strong hybrids and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the Indian market has seen fluctuations. In Q2-2023, the combined sales of strong hybrids and BEVs stood at 4.1% of the total passenger vehicle sales, slightly lower than the 4.3% recorded in the previous quarter.
Tata and Toyota continue to dominate the BEV and strong-hybrid EV markets with 71% and 69% market share, respectively. The Tata Tiago EV has emerged as the best-selling BEV product, further solidifying Tata’s position in the electric vehicle segment. On the other hand, the Toyota Innova Hycross, the best-selling strong-hybrid EV, continues to attract consumers with its impressive performance and eco-friendly features.
Despite a slight decline in the market share of strong hybrids and BEVs, the introduction of new products by rival brands has contributed to the overall growth of the segment. MG, with its new product, the MG Comet, has expanded the hatchback share in the BEV segment to 49%, while SUVs follow closely at 39%. However, the strong-hybrid EV segment remains limited by body styles predominantly dominated by utility vehicles (UVs).
