Recently, a customer encountered an issue with his Tata Tiago EV, and the manufacturer promptly replaced both the motor and gearbox without charge. The concerned vehicle was owned by an individual who shared their experience on the Team-Bhp forum. Upon purchase, the vehicle emitted a ‘drrrrrr’ noise during acceleration and regeneration. Initially, the owner attributed this noise to normal vehicle operations. However, upon further research into EVs, they came to realize that the car should actually operate in near silence. Subsequently, the owner sought assistance from an authorized service center to diagnose the issue. Despite thorough examination, the technicians were unable to detect any problems.

In a recent development, the owner revisited the service center, specifically requesting the service center technician to conduct a test drive and identify the source of the noise. This visit coincided with the vehicle’s scheduled service. After waiting for the technician to become available, the owner was informed by the mechanic in the evening that the noise was indeed abnormal and required a closer inspection.

The mechanic proceeded to raise the car on a lift within the workshop to investigate any potential contact between objects and the tires or other components. By spinning the wheels and enlisting the help of colleagues, they determined that the noise emanated from the vicinity of the car’s motor. This issue marked the first instance of such a problem being reported for a Tiago EV; a similar concern had previously been addressed in a Nexon EV.

Following this discovery, the mechanic recommended leaving the vehicle for further examination and data collection. Engineers analyzed the collected data to determine the subsequent course of action. Throughout this process, the owner maintained regular contact with the service center for updates. On the third day, they informed the owner that the problem had been pinpointed and that a replacement part was necessary.

The necessary part had already been ordered, with an estimated arrival time of 15-20 days. In the meantime, the owner was given the option to continue using the vehicle. However, specifics about the exact part slated for replacement were not communicated over the phone. Upon arriving at the workshop, the owner was informed that both the motor and gearbox would be replaced. While the issue pertained primarily to the gearbox, the integrated nature of the electric motor and gearbox necessitated the replacement of both components. The mechanic clarified that if the vehicle was not covered by warranty, the replacement would amount to approximately Rs 3 lakh. Once the replacement part arrived, installation was projected to take an additional two days, as technicians dispatched by Tata from the factory would perform the task. The owner expressed satisfaction with Tata’s handling of the situation.

Tata currently stands as one of the prominent car manufacturers in the country. Alongside conventional ICE vehicles, Tata has also delved into the production of electric vehicles, securing a leading position in this sector. At present, they boast three electric car models within their EV lineup, with more vehicles anticipated in the near future. Last year, Tata introduced the electric version of their popular hatchback, the Tiago, to the market. A comprehensive first-drive review of the Tiago EV is accessible on our website.
